Is Your Furnace Making These Ominous Sounds?

Home | Blog | Published on November 7th, 2016

It goes without saying that your furnace is an integral part of your home, offering reliable heat and comfort during the chilly months of winter. In towns such as ours, furnaces offer a strong defense against our winter temperatures. Whether you have a gas furnace or electrical system, you need it to function on demand.

Of course, part of making sure it does this is by scheduling routine maintenance, but also by ensuring that you spot signs of trouble before they become much larger emergencies. Odd noises, in particular, are one of the biggest signs of problems. If you hear any unusual sounds coming from your heater, you should shut it off and call us for repairs right away. Keep reading for a list of noises that your furnace should never make.

Grinding

This is most often a sign of metal parts that have become loose or dislodged, such as the fan. This increases friction as well as the chance of a motor overload.

Booming or Banging

If you hear a noise that resembles this when the furnace starts up, then there might be a problem with the burners releasing too much gas.

Rattling

Rattling is typically indicative of a loose bolt or some other object within the heater itself, though it could also be that the fan motor is loose in its housing, and vibrating as it runs.

Groaning

When you first start your furnace up on a cold day, you may notice a sound that resembles groaning. This occurs as the cold metal of your ductwork stretches and adjusts as warm air hits. Another potential cause of groaning is that there’s a component under considerable stress.

Clunking

A clunking sound can indicate that a fan blade is out of alignment, or that a cracked fan belt is thumping in its rotation.

If you notice any of the above sounds coming from your furnace, the best thing you can do is to give our service professionals a call.
