Follow These Tips to Prevent Plumbing Problems

white pipe with blue cloth tied around itIt can be difficult to keep your plumbing system in good shape over the years. After all, it’s mostly hidden from view, and most of the problems that can develop with your plumbing system won’t give off any warning signs unless they’ve been around for a while already.

Your pipes won’t last forever, even under the best circumstances. If you follow the tips below, however, you can at least ensure that they will last as long as possible. And remember, when you do need assistance, you needn’t look any further than our team to find a highly trained, professional plumber in Fairfax, VA.

Schedule Plumbing Maintenance

As we said above, many of the problems that can affect your plumbing system won’t give off any easily recognizable indicators when they first start forming. Most plumbing issues, in fact—like leaks or drain clogs—wont’ become detectable without professional-grade equipment and expertise.

Preventive plumbing maintenance performed once a year allows your plumber to closely examine your plumbing system and fix any problem areas before they start causing serious damage. You can save a lot of money on repair costs by keeping up on this consistently, and can even extend the effective lifespan of your pipes.

Schedule Repairs as Needed

No level of preventive maintenance can completely prevent a plumbing problem. You will, at some point, have to deal with a repair issue. If you suspect your plumbing system does have a problem or if you’ve been told you need plumbing repairs, the best thing you can do is call in our professionals as soon as possible to mitigate the damage.

Do Not Use Store-Bought Drain Cleaners

Liquid drain cleaners that you can get at the store seem convenient. They’re affordable, easy to get, and eliminate those clogged drains quickly, right? Unfortunately there’s a side effect to this. These drain cleaners have chemicals in them that are highly caustic.

This helps them cut through a clog all right, but excessive use of these cleaners eats away at the pipes too. Not only this, but even though chemical drain cleaners cut through clogs, they don’t remove the clogs, so you are forced to keep using them.

Use Drain Covers

The biggest cause of drain clogs in bathrooms is hair and soap scum. As minuscule as this seems, it adds up and forms unrelenting clumps within your drain pipes. One easy way to avoid this is by putting drain covers in your bathtub/shower as well as your bathroom sinks, and cleaning the drain cover off as needed (and disposing of the buildup in the trash).

Don’t Put FOG Down Your Kitchen Sink

FOG stands for Fats, Oils, and Grease. Natural byproducts of cooking, it makes sense that you’d pour them down the drain when cleaning your dishes. This is unfortunately a mistake, since they cool as they harden, and therefore can cause stubborn clogs. Of course, our team has the ability to clear these clogs and make sure they’re less likely to build up in the future. However, we’d like to help you prevent it altogether!
