We need to make that autumn transition from cooling to heating, and think about making sure that our HVAC systems are ready for winter. For some, that means shutting down an air conditioner and preparing a heating system that hasn’t been running for several months. But for others, it means that our heat pumps need to switch from cooling to heating.

Heat pumps are much like air conditioners, but they aren’t exactly the same. It’s important to know the differences and how they affect the maintenance and repair needs of the system. If you’ve got questions about heat pump maintenance, we’ve got the answers for you. Check out this helpful FAQ.

What’s the Difference Between a Heat Pump and an Air Conditioner?

Both heat pumps and air conditioners circulate refrigerant through a system of coils. A compressor keeps the refrigerant under enough pressure to keep flowing, and a blower fan (powered by a motor) distributes the cooled or heated air through ductwork and out the vents into the home. But while an air conditioner’s refrigerant always flows in one direction, a heat pump’s refrigerant flow is reversible.

Thanks to the reversing valve, a heat pump can switch between operating like an air conditioner—carrying heat out of the home—to functioning as a heating system—carrying heat into the home. And because it works due to temperature differential and not absolute temperature, it can increase the indoor temperature even when it’s quite chilly outdoors.

What Happens During Heat Pump Maintenance?

Cleaning is the first step in any maintenance process. This removes dust and grime that can interfere with heat pump function. Lubrication needs to be added to the places where components move against one another, so friction will be minimized. And your technician will also inspect and test all the components, adjusting, aligning, or recalibrating as needed.

When Should Heat Pump Maintenance Be Done?

Because an air conditioner or a furnace only works for one season of the year, it only requires once-a-year maintenance. But your heat pump does both jobs, and works year-round. This means it needs twice-yearly maintenance. The best times to have this done are spring and fall. That way, it’s in tip-top condition right when it’s about to get the most use.

What Are the Signs of a Heat Pump in Need of Repair?

Odd noises or unpleasant odors, poor performance or uneven temperature, ice buildup, or rising electric bills are all reasons to have a technician check up on your heat pump. Very short cycles where the heat pump turning on and off rapidly are another sign that repairs are needed. Finally, if your heat pump is not switching from one mode to another, that reversing valve needs repair.

If you take good care of your heat pump, it will take good care of you, providing energy-efficient climate control all year round.
